Meet the artist: Corinne Henderson
I’ve been an artist all my life. Some of my biggest memories of my childhood were hiding in the art room at school. It didn’t matter what I was creating, I just wanted make art. I made art in all forms: painting, drawing, cartooning, pottery, and jewelry. My original plan for after high school was to go to college in Maine to learn how to design jewelry and make glass beads. During my senior year of high school, I became the editor for our yearbook. I discovered Graphic Design and decided that was what I wanted to do with my life.
I attended Buffalo State College and received a duel Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts and Social Work. Throughout my college career I had taken a variety of courses in 2 Dimensional Design, Figure Drawing, 3 Dimensional sculpture, fundamental drawing, graphic design, and art therapy. During my third year, I found that I didn’t like to make art on a computer screen and dropped out of the Graphic Design Program.
While taking those boring lecture classes, I found myself doodling in my notebook instead of writing notes. My doodles were a series of repetitive patterns and designs. I would recreate those doodles with sharpie markers into larger forms of art that covered my dorm room walls. A friend of mine told me one day, “Hey, if you clean these up, you might actually have something here.”
After college, I have experimented throughout the years with various mixed media projects. I mainly created art with cut paper and acrylic paint. I told stories with these pieces and participated in a few local art shows. In between projects, I always went back to doodling. I did some research on what I was actually creating and I discovered Zentangle. They are unplanned artistic meditation patterns that turn into abstract pieces of art. I taught myself new patterns and techniques to make my work more detailed and interesting. It took me a while to find the right canvas to do my work on. It wasn’t until I learned how to DJ with vinyl records, I felt the need to draw on them. With the right art supplies, I finally found where I fit within the art world.
Currently, I live in Buffalo, NY. I work as a full time Social Worker for children with chronic health problems. I have a very diverse background in Human Services and I love to help people. I spend most of my time participating in group art shows, self-promoting my work, and supporting other local artists. One weekend a month, I volunteer at an art gallery. I enjoy meeting other art lovers and exchange thoughts and ideas. My long term art goals would be to participate in art shows in other cities outside of New York. Right now, I love to share my work online and locally. This experience has opened up many exciting opportunities and can’t wait to see where this takes me in the future.
